On January
16 - 19, students of our high school (IIb and IIIa) together with their
teachers, participated in "Nordplus
Junior" project "Ecological Issues" held at Kothla Jarve
school, Estonia, together with students from Latvia and Finland. On the first
day, activities to get to know each other took place, the whole school was
shown around, and the ecological problems of each country were discussed. The
evening was rounded off with food prepared by each country. Tuesday was
dedicated to art, postcards were made and drawn for St. Valentine's Day, pencil
cases were made from old jeans and jars, and those jeans were also used to make
brooches. Afterwards, time was spent exploring the city and finding things that
have a negative impact on people and nature. On the third day, the project
participants had an excursion to the shale mine chemical industry developer
Viru Keemia Grupp. Here, everyone had the opportunity to get to know what the
work in a shale mine is like, climb up to the roof of the building and see the
entire factory up close. After the excursion each country got to
discuss ecological problems and think of ideas how to solve them. At the
end of this activity, the students of each country received several objects
that were no longer in use (basically trash), which they had to give a second
life to. The students of Ĺ eduva Gymnasium
made instruments from the given boxes and unused cups and surprised everyone
with a Lithuanian folk song. The last day of the project started with a trip to
the animal shelter. The woman who owns this shelter told us that it all started
by her wish to rescue horses and now it has become a tradition to rescue at
least one horse on her birthday. This shelter also owns animals such as: sheep, goats,
piglets, black foxes, raccoons, cats and dogs. The owner of this shelter said
that she felt it was her life's purpose to save and protect animals. After that
we visited the Narva City Art Gallery and Narva Castle. At the end of the day
everyone returned to the school and all the activities of the week were
discussed and sad goodbyes were said. This project allowed us to get acquainted
with the ecological problems of each country, forced to discuss and look for
solutions that would benefit nature and people.
